Northerns History
Transvaal Nomads, founded in 1960, grew to such an extent that playing fields were limited to 120 players, and membership applications had a 12 to 18 month waiting list. Loads of guys from Pretoria could not get a regular game let alone a membership, so Arthur Ferneyhough, John Thornton, Colin Mostert and Bert Pistorius, formed a Northerns sub-committee, met with the founder of Nomads - Mike Florence - on 7 February 1967 and presto! Northerns was formed along with 37 other like-minded individuals. Northerns first official game took place on 1 April 1967 at Irene. There is no need to be "April fooled" by this date, look where we are 50 years down the road and we even now have a golden daisy. We at Northerns thank our founding members, our past captains, those elected to higher office as National Chairmen and various other esteemed positions on the National Executive, for their dedicated service and leadership to our noble cause. We salute each and every one of you! BACK TO CONTENTS
